The name
           tells a story

In the very early of the 12th century,

Valdemar Sejr was king of Denmark from 1202 to 1241. He was at the time one of Europe's most powerful princes. In 1205 he married a Bohemian royal daughter, Dagmar. She became a beloved queen, kind to the poor, if the popular poetry is to be believed.
But on 24 May 1212, when the king was staying at Skanderborg Castle, the young queen was dying in Ribe. According to the folk tale, a little boy is sent to Skanderborg to summon King Valdemar.

The queen says: "Immediately send messengers to Skanderborg and ask my lord and king to come."
Before the queen had wanted it, it had already happened. Two messengers had already been sent to Skanderborg for the king. Queen Dagmar's son who was also called Karl of Rise, was the one who had been sent last; but he rode so fast that he got far past the first ridder. When he came rushing towards Skanderborg Castle, the king stood on a bridge and looked over the road.

Valdemar said; "God help me for that message that boy brings!. He rides as if it were life and death. God knows how it is now with Dagmar?"
Soon Carl of Rise brought the sad news, he himself was so moved by it that he could hardly speak.
The king was at shock.

"God forbid she should be dead before I come back!"
He said, hurrying to his men. With a hundred knights, he set out from Skanderborg. When he rode over Randbøl heath, there were only fifteen who could still follow him; when he came to Gredstedbro, Carl of Rise followed him only with difficulty on his exhausted walker, and when he crossed Ribe bridge, the king was alone.

It is further told that when the king arrives at the queen's chamber she is already dead, but at the king's command everyone kneels in prayer and she opens her eyes one last time.
Dagmar was buried in Sct. Bendt's church in Ringsted, where Valdemar Sejr  were later laid to rest.

But the
          first story...

we heard about him was probably also the one he is best known for today. This took place in 1219
- 7 years after the first part of our story.

Karl of Rise was knighted on the battlefield by King Valdemar Sejr, when in 1219 King Valdemar Sejr landed with an army in Estonia
to fight the pagan Estonians. In the Danish army there was among the clergy the old Bishop Peder, who predicted that the Danes would win by a sign that came from above. Before the great battle, Karl of Rise was out scouting with another knight, but they were both captured by the Estonians.

During the great battle (Battle of Volmar) the 2 prisoners stood on a hill, unbound, as the Estonians had such esteem for their bravery that they had freed both from their bonds.

Then Bishop Peder suddenly shouted: "Look to heaven, Christians! And don't give up - you see the sign from Above!".
The warriors stopped and looked to the sky, and in the storm, a great red banner with a white cross swirled above their heads.
"The higher it is lifted, the closer is victory!" sounded a strong and mighty voice, which no one felt where it came from, but which many believed came from heaven. "Behold, it is the banner of our heavenly king!" cried Bishop Peder - "Only by that can we win; but if it falls into enemy hands, we must surely perish!"
The Danes now rushed forward to save the banner, but it fell down precisely on the hill where the 2 prisoners stood, and Karl of Rise seized and lifted it up to the sky. The Danes saw it and recognized Karl of Rise and soon the victory was theirs.

          We fell in love

                      with the story

The great historical part of these stories captured our hearts. We will bring our passion for danish history with us at Saturday Racing Club. We just had to figure out how. When Karl of Rise was a young boy and we had bought a mare, we had to being creative, and ended up putting all three words together. KarlafRise. And by removing a single letter, it became Karla Rise, but this was not easy to get approved, so again we were creative. We had to have that name! His story of being the fastest rider, on the strongest and fastes horse, made so much sence.
And then Carla Rise, was the name.
